The first guideline that you need to meet is the income guideline. If you made over $73,000 in 2021, unfortunately in New York you don't qualify to file for free.
If your yearly gross income was lower than $73,000 in 2021, you meet the guideline to file for free in New York State. According to the New York State tax service website, the income guideline is defined by your federal adjusted gross income.
Federal adjusted gross income (AGI) is defined as gross income minus adjustments to income. Gross income includes your wages, dividends, capital gains, business income, retirement distributions, as well as other income.
In order to file for free, you will need to visit the New York State tax service website and then choose an online tax service from their list. Make sure to double-check that you meet the criteria for filing for free. Each service has different guidelines for taxpayers.
After choosing the correct online tax prep service, you must follow their steps and if you meet all the New York requirements to file for free, you will not have to pay anything to file your taxes.
