There are no concerns about the drinking water in the area, but the advisory went out last week from the New York State DEC.

There was a huge problem where people started noticing that some fish were dying and washing up to the top of the creek and onto the land. Then more and more and more fish kept on dying. Eventually, the New York State DEC got so many complaints and phone calls about all of the dying fish that residents have been seeing that they went last week to investigate. They went down to take samples and survey the situation, and now they are urging people NOT to go fishing or play in the water in the southtowns--specifically downstream past Franklinville, New York, in Ischua Creek. According to the New York State website:

DEC is working with State and local partners to lead a comprehensive investigation into the die-off of multiple species in Ischua Creek and any other potential environmental impacts,” DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said. “We are advising the public not to fish or recreate in the affected area while DEC takes all actions necessary to ensure protection of public health and the environment.”

The New York State DEC wants people in the area to know there is no indication of impacts to public drinking water supplies as of right now. All of the people who are in charge of the water authorities in the area have been notified, and according to the DEC, they are taking precautionary steps.
