There is a very important day in American history that is about to be celebrated, and some lawmakers have even pushed to make it a federal holiday. Across New York State, communities are preparing for Flag Day 2026 with parades, ceremonies, and patriotic celebrations. But could Flag Day eventually mean a day off for students and workers across New York and the United States?

Is Flag Day a National Holiday?

Do you fly an American flag on your front porch or in your yard? If so, do you know how to dispose of it properly when it becomes worn or damaged?

There is a respectful way to retire an old American flag. You can check with your local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post, American Legion chapter, or scouting organization to learn about proper flag retirement ceremonies and disposal options.

"Many state and county government offices and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts have flag disposal boxes outside of their buildings. Police stations also collect them".

A Special Flag Day Memory

We recently had a very special moment in our family when our youngest son, Gus, was asked to lead the Pledge of Allegiance before his kindergarten graduation ceremony. It was such a proud moment, and watching him practice for the big day made it even more meaningful.

For many Americans, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is one of the first patriotic traditions learned as a child. Even today, hearing young voices recite the pledge can be incredibly moving. It’s also something we start our show with every weekday morning as a way to begin the workday or school day together.

Will Flag Day Ever Become a Federal Holiday?

As of now, Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. Over the years, there have been efforts in Congress to elevate the day’s status and encourage Americans to reflect on the meaning of the flag and what it represents.

"To amend title 5, United States Code, to designate Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day as a legal public holiday".

Flag Day offers an opportunity to remember the sacrifices made by generations of Americans and to recognize the freedoms symbolized by the Stars and Stripes. As the United States continues its celebration of America’s 250th birthday, some believe there could be renewed interest in creating a more formal national observance.

Flag Day Celebrations Across New York State

Flag Day celebrations will take place throughout New York State and across the country. Many communities will host parades, ceremonies, and family-friendly events honoring the American flag and the history it represents.

This year’s Flag Day also falls on President Donald Trump’s birthday, adding another notable connection to the June 14 observance.
