What Is A Heatwave?

A heatwave is defined by the National Weather Service as three or more consective days of temperatures of 90 degrees or warmer.

Is New York State In The Middle Of A Heatwave?

Most of the state saw temperatures hit 90 or warmer yesterday. More of the same is today, and it looks like we could crack the 90 degree mark tomorrow as well.

If that happens, New York State would be considered to be under a heatwave.

Even if we don't break the 90-degree mark, it will be very hot across the state over the next several days. The heat index could be in the mid-90s even if the temperature doesn't make it to 90.

How To Stay Safe During Extreme Heat.

While these extreme heat conditions exist across the state, there are some things that you need to know to stay safe.

Have a plan to find shade if you need to be outdoors. Make sure you stay well hydrated, and try to keep cool clothing or a cool, wet towel handy to cool you down.

You should also know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
