I was always shocked when other kids told me about the allowance that they got. My father wasn't big on giving us money for things that he thought we should be doing anyways. Household chores were just part of the gift of living under dad's roof.

My father wasn't cheap and wasn't mean. He would give us money when and if we needed it. But a regular allowance wasn't a thing in our home.
