Don’t get me wrong. The idea that I could possibly win $500 million for just paying a dollar and picking some numbers is pretty cool. I am not what you would call a “bleeding heart liberal” by any stretch of the imagination. However, the whole buzz and hype about this Friday’s jackpot got me thinking a little bit about our society. I understand that there are so many cool things you could do and buy with instant fortunes. I play the lottery occasionally and even try my hand at raffles here and there. While talking on the air about what we would do IF we won, I thought about what could happen with the dollar if we give it to charities. Locally or nationally, when you give to charity, everybody is a GUARANTEED winner. The odds are always in your favor when you give. If all the people that were going to play the Mega Millions or even the lottery daily gave that dollar to a charity, think about how lives could change. Perhaps cures would be possible. Maybe a kid will get a chance to play a sport. Perhaps a wounded hero will get a chance at walking again. Don’t get me wrong, I am guilty of “frivolous” spending just like anyone else. When I get asked, and am available, I donate my time to organizations when I can and many times I will donate money to causes that I have ties to or feelings toward. I am sure most of you reading this give more than your fair share to charities as well. It just amazes me how people will line up to put money on something that has such bad odds. Here are just a few links to some of the local charities you can help.
