"What a weird winter huh?" Have you heard that from your friends yet? No doubt about it, this weather is nutty! The pond hockey tournament is now a parking lot street hockey tourney because of a lack of ice on Lake Erie. The snowmobile season has been one of the worst in recent memory and there are other problems as well. The Maple Syrup industry is suffering as well.I found an article from back in 2007, that stated...

the records of maple syrup production over the last 40 years and found a fairly steady progression of the maple sugaring season moving earlier and earlier, and also getting shorter

Who doesn't love PURE Maple sugar and syrup? Did you know that Western New York is a major syrup producing area? Much of what is collected is sent from our local farms to Vermont! With the warm winter we have had so far, the season is in jeopardy of being a success. The farmers can't rely on the standard traditions of trying to time the season. Most of the farmers I have spoken to say that they are still getting prepared for the season even though some of the trees have started to run sap! This warm weather may have implications on the Maple population...

Over the long haul, the industry in New England may face an even more profound challenge, the disappearance of sugar maples altogether as the climate zone they have evolved for moves across the Canadian border

Pray for some cold weather. We need a few weeks of cold to ensure a good crop and a more predictable season!
