The lost and stray animals in Buffalo who either need to find their way home or a new home have had quite a hard time in New York State's second-largest city. The current Buffalo Animal Shelter is in an unbelievable state of disrepair.

Activists far and wide have used Buffalo's animal shelter as an example of what you are not supposed to do if you care about animals.

It was just over a year ago when people all over town were jumping for joy after former Acting Mayor Scanlon announced that the Animal Shelter was getting a new home on Niagara Street in Buffalo. That project, which was supposed to start construction this past spring, never happened due to a litany of issues, including the Common Council not coming to an agreement with the potential developer Ellicott Development.

That, of course, dashed hopes of a new shelter. However, Sean Ryan made developing a new animal shelter one of his major campaign promises, and on Thursday, October 29, 2026, that promise took one big step towards being a reality as the new location of the new animal shelter was announced.

The new Buffalo Animal Shelter will be built on the site of a former Buffalo Police Department Station on Louisiana Street. The new shelter, after a $30 million investment by the city, would have a much larger capacity to house animals when compared to the current shelter. Being able to care for up to 100 dogs and 130 cats would be a vast improvement.
