Record Amounts Of Rain Fell In Buffalo, New York

As Buffalo and Western New York come out of being flooded all around the region, new information from the National Weather Service about the amount of rain that hit the region over the last couple of days has many people scratching their heads in disbelief.

Not only did a whole lot of rain fall on Buffalo since Wednesday, September 2, 2026, but it was also record amounts of rain. So much rain that is overwhelmed Buffalo's sewer system and caused flooding and sewage backups across town.

Since September 1st, Buffalo has received more than 3 inches of rain at the official NWS office at the Buffalo Airport. The average rainfall that Buffalo sees in its first 4 days of September is typically less than 1/2 of an inch.

The most rain that ever fell on September 3rd was 1.79 inches, a record that was set back in 1878. However, that was broken this year, as a record 3.04 inches of rain fell at the Buffalo Airport. That rainfall brings the total amount of rain we normally see this time of year to more than 7 times its typical average.

While 3.04 inches is the official total that will be recorded in the history books, different areas of Western New York saw a lot more rain. The village of Snyder saw 3.46 inches, North Buffalo saw 3.35 inches, and the village of Kenmore had 3.29 inches of rainfall.

Videos have been circulating all over social media of manhole covers being blown open and flooded streets due to overflowing sewers in Buffalo.

Now residents of the city of Buffalo and neighboring suburbs are starting to clean up after this historic rain. Luckily, no further rain is forecast for the next few days as families and businesses head into the long Labor Day Holiday weekend.
