If you ask any real estate professional in the nation what city has the hottest housing market, they would say Buffalo. As hard as it is for us to believe here in the 716, Buffalo is both one of the top places to invest and still one of the most affordable.

However, that idea of affordability is based on the nationwide scale and not necessarily on Buffalo's specific circumstances.

Buffalo still is one of the poorest cities in America, and as prices rise, it makes it harder for more people to make ends meet. Many Buffalonians who find themselves on the margins of society need some additional assistance to be able to find safe and affordable housing in Western New York.

It's been known for years that Buffalo requires thousands of additional affordable housing units to keep up with the people's needs. While there has been quite a bit of affordable housing development in recent years, the units that are being built are not enough to keep up with the demand.

That demand is getting a little more supply thanks to the Salvation Army, which recently announced more than 150 new affordable housing units are coming soon to Buffalo.

According to a report from WIVB-TV, the Salvation Army is spending $100 million in Buffalo to transform properties on Main Street and North Pearl.

A seven-story apartment complex with 140 one- and two-bedroom apartments is coming to their current Main Street campus, and 17 three-bedroom townhomes will be constructed on Pearl.

The new units will have affordable rents, targeted for people who make 60-to-70% of the Area Median Income in Western New York. That means a family of four could make around $60,000 annually and quality.
