Buffalo Bills Sign Wide Receiver Curtis Samuel

The Buffalo Bills are on the board in the wide receiver free agency market, signing former Washington Commanders wide receiver Curtis Samuel to a three-year, $24 million contract that’s worth up to $30 million with $15 million guaranteed.

What Curtis Samuel Brings to the Bills

Samuel brings versatility to the offense, and while some may question his fit since he primarily plays in the slot, this is a veteran signing to give more run after the catch ability to Buffalo’s offense.

Of important note – Curtis Samuel is reuniting with Joe Brady, who was his offensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers. In Brady’s system, Samuel was able to demonstrate a wide variety of manners in which he can contribute, including lining up in the backfield and taking direct carries.

Between 2018 - 202, Samuel had five rushing touchdowns, with him seeing the most usage on the ground in his career in 2020 with 41 carries for 200 rushing yards (4.9 yards per carry).

The reunion with Brady is a significant one – it will be Brady’s first year as the full time offensive coordinator, and with Josh Allen’s arm and opposing defenses opting to play Buffalo deep, Samuel will provide Brady with a familiar Jack-of-all-trades that he can creatively utilize.

Buffalo Not Done with Wide Receivers?

The Samuel signing doesn’t rule out Buffalo being in the hunt for wide receivers in the draft, but it may indicate Brandon Beane focusing his energy on outside receivers now that Samuel joins Khalil Shakir as options that can feast underneath and provide plenty of pre-snap motions and mismatches with linebackers.

The wide receiver room is taking shape in the post-Gabe Davis era, and Buffalo might be showing that they have a desire to hit more singles than home runs in the passing game.
