Tomorrow you will have a chance to see something really rare in the sky above Western New York. A rare total lunar eclipse will take place on March 3rd, and it will make the moon look very red.

Total Lunar Eclipse/Blood Moon In Western New York

A total lunar eclipse will happen early Tuesday morning, and it will be the last one until 2028 that will be visible here in Western New York.

The moon will appear to be a deep copper color as it makes it way through the Earth's shadow. The eclipse is expected to last around an hour, so there should be plenty of time and chances to see it here in the 716.

Best Viewing Time For The  Lunar Eclipse

The best time to see the Blood Moon, lunar eclipse, will be between 6:04 am and 7:02 am on Tuesday morning. Sunrise is set for around 6:48 am, so the peak time to see the Blood Moon will be between 6:04 am and 6:45 am.

You will not need a telescope or special eyewear to see the lunar eclipse. Unlike a solar eclipse, it is safe to view a lunar eclipse with your naked eyes.

Why Is Thise Eclipse Called a "Blood Moon"

The name comes from the color the moon will look when it passes through Earth's shadow. Instead of its normal white color, the moon will look more coppery or reddish.
