The Buffalo Bills signed a Pro Bowl guard in the off-season in Rodger Saffold.  Unfortunately over the weekend, he was involved in a car crash.

The bad news is that he suffered an injury to his ribs.  The good news is that coach Sean McDermott says he will be back "in due time." (whatever that means...)

So what do they do in the meantime?

The team is allowed 90 players on their roster at the beginning of training camp.  With Saffold on the NFL (non-football injured list) that frees up a spot for the Bills to try someone else out.

The person to fill that spot will be guard Jordan Simmons.  Simmons has played for only two teams in his NFL career.  He started in Oakland in 2017 playing for the Raiders.  Then he was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Seahawks.  His second stint with the Raiders happened after they moved to Vegas when they signed him off Seattle's practice squad.

He's got a couple of weeks to show the Bills what he's got.  All teams will have to narrow their roster down to 85 players by August 17th.  Then the next cut-off will come a week later on August 24th when they need to narrow it down to 80.

The biggest cut happens on or before August 31st when they have to narrow it down to their 53-person roster.

The season starts early for the Bills this year as they begin the NFL season with a game against the Superbowl Champion Los Angeles Rams on Thursday September 8th.
