After talking about the butter sculpture at the New York State Fair I brought up that my friend has just made some homemade butter. She used a mason jar and heavy cream...that's it. So Clay and I decided to take Liz's Kitchen LIVE and make mason jar butter on the air. Check the comments in the video for some excellent tips!

MASON JAR BUTTER

  • Mason Jar
  • Heavy Cream

Take your mason jar and fill it halfway and then start shaking. Depending on the size of the jar it could take anywhere from 5-20 minutes.

Once the jar starts to slosh you have whipped cream, keep going until you're sloshing with solids. Then, keep shaking a little more until you get one giant piece of butter,

Viola, you have butter and buttermilk. Remove the butter and place on a sieve or strainer to get the remaining buttermilk out.

Place in a container and salt the butter, if you like, to taste. Store, covered, in the fridge, and use within 5 days.
