Our Hometown Hero this week is 18-year-old Matthew Fischer from Alden! Matthew is a graduate of Alden High School.

He left for boot camp in August of 2012, and he spent 19 weeks there after suffering a leg injury but was able to graduate from the Marine Corps recruit depot at Parris Island, S.C. on December 14. He has been stationed in Camp Lejeune, N.C. for the past four months after graduating second in his class.

He enjoys fishing, hunting and playing sports. Matt's family can't wait to have him home again and hopes he can get some time out in the woods to enjoy hunting.

My brother is a hero not only to me but to many people he comes in contact with. He is a great role model and my best friend. I miss him very much and am so proud of all he has accomplished. Having a brother in the Marines has certainly changed my life and made me appreciate the time we have with him when he is home. I am very proud of LCPL Fischer and can't wait to have him home again soon.

Thanks again, Matt!

If you would like to nominate someone who is currently serving our country or has served in the past, click the button below. We will choose a new Hometown Hero each Friday. If their name is chosen, we will not only feature them right here on WYRK.com, but we'll be sure to thank them for their service on the air and dedicate the first song on Noon Tunes to them.
