For my 14th birthday, I begged and pleaded with my parents to buy me a guitar. I had never been more excited to receive a birthday gift.

Truth be told, part of the reason I wanted to learn to play guitar was so I could become a famous pop star like Britney Spears, get Taylor Hanson to fall in love with me, and marry him so I could live happily ever after.

But the other reason is that around the time I turned 13, I started to really fall in love with music. All genres, all decades. I grabbed every CD I could get my hands on and listened to them non-stop from the first song to the last. I memorized every lyric and key change. My 13th year on earth was also when I decided I wanted to grow up to be in radio, so I could be immersed in music every single day.

But guess what? That amazing guitar that was the best birthday gift ever? It sat in a corner of my room mostly untouched. Trying to figure out how to learn to play it without any resources was way too daunting and overwhelming for me.

Eventually, my older brother stole the guitar out of my room without me realizing, picked it up (what seems like) immediately, and still plays it to this day. He even fronts a local band with his friends. Why couldn’t that have been me?

In fact, that’s been the story most of my life. I’ve surrounded myself with a slew of friends and family who are amazing musicians, and who always encouraged me to give it a try. And a few more times throughout my adult life, I almost did, but always backed out and gave up. Trying to find the time to meet one-on-one with an instructor was nearly impossible, and most of the YouTube tutorials I tried were confusing, stressful, and frankly, boring.

Until that is… I was introduced to Fret Zealot.

Fret Zealot, from right here in Buffalo, New York, is basically Netflix for music education. They offer over 3,000 lessons, 100+ courses to take/watch, and a massive library of over 80,000 songs you can learn to master.

Fret Zealot’s video courses make me feel that maybe … I could actually do this. Their videos are easy-going, incredibly clear and concise, and — most importantly — a ton of fun.

Guess what? That’s not even the coolest part.

Fret Zealot also offered an LED light system that fits over the frets of the guitar that shows you exactly where to put your fingers. Can it get any easier to learn how to finally play the guitar?

You can even get the LED system pre-installed on one of the many professional-grade guitars they have in their online store (I picked out a Yamaha, and I’m in love all over again).

Right now I’m working my way through their 30-Day Beginner Challenge, which gives you a short video every day to watch and play along with to get the basics down pat.

Let’s be clear - I am a long way away from becoming the pop superstar of my teenage dreams. However, for the first time ever, I actually feel…dare I say confident? And I know that this time, thanks to Fret Zealot, the journey will be so much fun.

If you’ve always wanted to learn guitar (or ukulele too! That’s next on my list), you should definitely check out fretzealot.com.

Eat your heart out, Taylor Hanson.
