Former Buffalo Sabre Set To Make Hockey History

A former Buffalo Sabre is set to make history with the National Hockey League.

According to his Twitter page, Kevin Weekes is reporting that former Buffalo Sabre Mike Grier will become the new general manager with the San Jose Sharks. With that appointment, Grier will become the first African American to hold a GM spot in NHL history.

Grier plated for four different teams during his NHL career. He was first drafted by the St. Louis Blue in the 1993 NHL draft. While he played in college, his rights were traded to the Edmonton Oilers. He made his pro debut with the Oilers in 1996.

He was traded to the Washington Capitals in 2002. He would play in Washington for two years before the Buffalo Sabres traded Jakub Klepiš for him in 2004.

Grier played with the Buffalo Sabres from 2004 until 2006. He left Buffalo as a free agent at the end of the 2006 season and signed with the San Jose Sharks.

He would play with the Sharks until the 2009 season. He re-signed with the Buffalo Sabres before the start of the 2009-2010 season and played for two seasons before retiring at the end of the 2010-2011 season.

During his playing career with the Buffalo Sabres, Grier played in 241games, scoring 23 points and 47 assists for a total of 70 points.
