A lot of people have decided that they will be scrapping their 2026 summer vacation plans and opting for a closer, "more affordable" staycation or local road trip this summer. Unfortunately for us in New York, a new study has revealed that a road trip here is more expensive than in any other state.

The study comes from Compare The Market AU. They ranked states by a number of factors, including the average fee that you pay for a toll, the total toll road distance, the cost per kilometer (the study was done in Australia), and the actual number of toll bridges and tunnels that exist in that state. They weighted each factor, so for example, the average fee accounted for 50% of the ranking, while the total distance of toll roads accounted for 10%.

New York has America's most expensive toll roads

When ranked in this study, New York came in at the top of the list when it came to the most expensive toll roads. While our average fee isn't the highest (that crown went to Pennsylvania, followed by Ohio and Kansas, respectively),  the total distance of toll roads was pretty high at 859.53 km.

Road trippers aren't the only ones affected by these costs

If you're making a road trip your vacation, these totals could be shocking. But what's worse is when people have to pay these tolls on a regular basis for work. Those fees can add up quickly, especially when they're added to fuel, insurance, maintenance, and more. It costs a lot to get places quickly and efficiently.
