March 14th is National Potato Chip Day. There’s no official government proclamation – it’s probably a creation of snack food companies to celebrate the nation’s favorite snack food.

Americans eat 1.2 billion pounds of potato chips every year. Regular or plain potato chips are the most popular, but some of the other top sellers are barbeque, sour cream and onion, salt and vinegar and ranch.
Who invented them? It was chef George Crum at a restaurant in Saratoga NY. A customer kept sending his fried potatoes back to the kitchen complained they weren’t crispy enough. He said they were too thick and soggy. So Crum cut them so thin they couldn’t be eaten with a fork. The customer loved them and it ended up as a regular item on the restaurant’s menu.
Americans eat about 30 pounds of potatoes per person each year.
At least a quarter of the potatoes we eat are French fries.
An old fashion remedy for curing a headache is to place raw, sliced potatoes on your forehead tied tight with a cloth for 20 minutes. Not sure if it really works. Anybody who wants to try it let me know.
