Western New York Has a Brand New Area Code

Phone calls are not like what they used to be.

Back in the day, you would call anyone and everyone. Whether it was your mom and dad, a friend, neighbor or a call service, it was always the only line of communication.

Now with texting, we hardly call anyone anymore unless we physically have to, like your internet provider or a doctor's office. You would always start with the "716" area code, which is the area code for the greater Buffalo region (Western New York).

Now, there will soon be another area code that will mean the person or business is based in Western New York.

Jeff Preval of WIVB reports breaking news that "624" will be the new area code for Western New York.

The reason is because experts say that "716" numbers are running out and the "624" area code will be the new area code for brand new numbers for those here in Western New York.

The "624" area code will begin in the spring of 2024, so about a year and a half away.

This is pretty major news, because for the longest time, 716 was synonymous with Buffalo culture. I mean, it still will be but now, this means that 624 will also go hand-in-hand with Western New York and something all of us will have to start getting used to. "624" just doesn't feel right.

I've had the same number for the last 10 years with my smartphone. To be honest, I don't even know any friend or family member's number anymore -- I just tap the name to text or call...
