New York State Set To Implement A “Gas Tax” Holiday?
The price of gas continues to climb, and there is a push by New York lawmakers to pass a "Gas Tax" holiday bill that would eliminate the state tax at the pump. So, how close is that proposed bill set to becoming a law?
New York State Ready For Gas Tax Holiday?
With the cost of a gallon of regular unleaded gas costing around $4.61 in New York State, any kind of relief would be welcomed by drivers. So, is a Gas Tax holiday something that we could see soon? I sure hope so, but you shouldn't get your hopes too high, just yet.
The current proposed bill, Assembly Bill A11438, aka "Gas Tax Holiday" in New York State, would allow New York State to drop the tax it charges on each gallon of gas.
This would save drivers on average around .37 cents per gallon. As of right now, New York State charges between .$.35 and $.40 per gallon for taxes and fees, depending on which county you get your gas from.
Each county also adds its own tax to the fuel charge, and those taxes are up to each county to raise or lower, not the state.

The current proposed bill is pretty far from being signed into law. As of this writing, Assembly Bill A11438 was referred to the Ways and Means Committee. The proposed bill would still have to be passed by the New York State Assembly and then the Senate before it would go to the governor to be signed into law.
That is still a lot of steps, so if you are hoping for some relief at the pump, a "Gas Tax Holiday" isn't going to be the best option.
