It’s the first big cookout weekend of 2026 here in New York State. Memorial Day weekend is finally here, and thousands of New Yorkers are getting ready to enjoy some time off while firing up the barbecue. But before you light the grill, many people are once again asking the same question: Did New York State actually ban charcoal grilling?

Memorial Day Weekend Marks the Unofficial Start of Summer in New York

It has been an interesting stretch of weather across New York State so far this spring. What started out as a very wet and chilly season quickly turned into several days of intense heat and humidity before temperatures dropped back down to levels that felt more like the middle of fall.

Regardless of what Mother Nature decides to do, the unofficial start of summer has arrived, and families across the Empire State are excited to spend time outside together this Memorial Day weekend.

Backyards, campsites, patios, and parks are expected to be packed with grills, coolers, and plenty of summer food favorites.

Did New York State Ban Charcoal Grills?

The debate over whether charcoal grills are allowed in New York State seems to pop up every year around this time.

Part of the confusion comes from New York’s ongoing environmental efforts. The state has continued pushing for cleaner energy solutions and reduced emissions, leading many residents to wonder whether charcoal grilling could eventually face restrictions.

There has also been continued discussion surrounding wood-burning stoves, fireplaces, and other fuel-burning appliances throughout New York. Because of that, some people assume charcoal grills may also be on the chopping block. There are some Legislators in New York State who are pushing to prevent a ban of this sort from impacting cooking in New York State.

Assembly Bill A210: "Prohibits banning the burning of wood, coal, natural gas, propane, or other fuels for the purposes of cooking or otherwise preparing food".

However, as of now, there is no statewide ban on charcoal grilling in New York State.

Some Local Restrictions May Apply

While charcoal grilling is still legal statewide, there are certain areas where restrictions can apply.

Some apartment complexes, parks, campgrounds, and municipalities may have rules regarding:

  • Open flames
  • Grill placement
  • Balcony grilling
  • Fire safety regulations
  • Seasonal burn bans

Before firing up your grill this weekend, it’s always a good idea to check local rules and regulations where you live or plan to cook outdoors.
