It may not be the trophy that most hunters think of when they head to the woods to hunt bears, but it is an important one. New York State is asking hunters to send them a tooth from the bear that they shoot this season. It is part of the ongoing conservation efforts that not only aid the bear population, it also helps keep hunting alive in New York.

The deer and bear season started for archery hunters and the weather has been great! The cooler air moved in just in time and it seems like it was a prefect season opener. Hunters have an added bonus if they want to hunt with a crossbow this season as New York State has changed it's policy to allow for them to be used all throughout the deer and bear season.

Bear Hunting In New York State

Black bear season for archery hunters is on from October 1st until November 14th and reopens in December.

The black bear population seems to be thriving and there are more and more bear interactions with humans being reported. Even in busy villages, bears seem to be wandering for snacks. But as far as hunting for bears, the season is here and there are some things to note. If you kill one, save the teeth!

According to a report from the New York State DEC on it's website, the teeth will help biologists. "Attention Bear Hunters: DEC would like to collect a tooth from your harvested bear to determine its age. You may process your bear, but please save the skull or lower jaw. DEC will either contact you or mail you a tooth collection packet".

Legally, New York State hunters are required to report any deer or bear kill within 7 days of taking them.
