There is a law in New York State that requires hunters to report their harvest/kill within 7 days. This is very important for the future of hunting and for conservation efforts.

The deer season is underway, and across New York State, archery hunters are looking to fill their tags and their freezers! New for the 2025 deer season, New York State allows hunters to use a crossbow to hunt for the duration of the season, not just a specific crossbow season.

The New York State Department of Conservation reminds hunters who are successful to report the deer that they kill. "Hunters are required to report the harvest of deer, bear, and turkey within 7 days of take".

There are many ways to do this, and it really only takes a few minutes. There is a link online, an APP, and even a phone number that you can use right from camp after you tag the deer you kill. "Call the toll-free automated reporting system at 1-866-GAME-RPT (1-866-426-3778)".

The season is starting with great weather! Here in Western New York, the forecast calls for temperatures in the 40s with clear skies! The warmer weather is expected to come back. Hopefully, by the time the rut kicks in, we will have colder air moving in.

For those who prefer to hunt with a firearm like a rifle or shotgun, you'll have to wait until mid-November. Niagara County hunters can now use a rifle in most areas of the county, with a few exceptions in certain locations.

Good luck, and remember to report your deer! If you want to share a photo or two or send me a story, I'd love to hear from you via email: claymoden@wyrk.com
