The Attorney General in New York is calling for the complete elimination of student debt! In a news release sent out this week, New York Attorney General Letitia James called on President Biden to not only continue the student loan forgiveness period, but to get rid of the loans all together!

In a letter to President Biden, Attorney General James and the coalition stress that immediate relief is needed for borrowers struggling with the unmanageable burden of student loan debt. The attorneys general acknowledge the administration’s commitment to addressing the issue, however, the coalition urges President Biden to immediately exercise his authority under the Higher Education Act to cancel all federal student loan debt for every borrower.

This is a BIG deal and would be a huge weight off the shoulders of so many who are trying to pay back their loans.

Currently, student borrowers owe more than $1.7 trillion to the federal government. In their letter, the coalition argues that a full cancelation of student debt is necessary to address the sheer enormity of debts owed, systemically flawed repayment and forgiveness systems, and the disproportionate impact of the debt burden on millions of borrowers.

While we wait to see if the Biden Administration will budge on this, those with Federal loans have been given an extension of the "grace" period to pay until August 31. My guess is,. that we will see that date pushed again until the end of the year. But some are saying that this may extend through the President Biden's first term!

GET FREE AC FROM NEW YORK:

The summer of 2022 will feature so many great events that we are looking forward to. But when you are not outside enjoying these fun things, you might be wishing your apartment or house was cool enough to stay comfortable in. Thanks to New York State, there is good news for those who qualify.

Officials have announced 15-million dollars in cooling assistance through the state to help low-income residents who don't have air-conditioning units.

The program covers the cost of an AC unit and installation for all New Yorkers who qualify and applications are already being accepted.

The weather this spring has been a roller coaster of sorts. Many have had their heat on one day and then air conditioning the next. The snow was flying as recently as last week! But we all know that those long, hot summer days will be coming and there is nothing more frustrating than trying to sleep when the house is crazy hot! The other issue for some is health related. Breathing issues become a bigger challenge in the hot weather but to add to that is the humid conditions much of New York gets in the summer. An air conditioner is certainly a benefit to anyone who has young kids as well.

To qualify for cooling assistance under the amended guidelines, applicants must meet HEAP eligibility criteria and income thresholds, which vary by household size. For instance, a family of four may have a maximum gross monthly income of $5,249 or an annual gross income of $62,983. Prior to this year, the cooling component of HEAP was only available to income-eligible households with an individual suffering from a documented medical condition exacerbated by extreme heat.
