Niagara Falls always provides a picture-perfect backdrop for Instagram, but on Tuesday, it's going to be even better for people hoping to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

The Falls are often illuminated in different colors

If you've been to the falls at night, you might have seen them illuminated in different colors before. They've done it in the past to recognize certain causes like breast cancer awareness, domestic violence awareness, and more.

It's all done by the Niagara Falls Illumination Board. They've financed and operated the “illumination of Niagara Falls” since 1925. They review and approve requests for specific causes every month. They're made up of representatives from the City of Niagara Falls Ontario, City of Niagara Falls, New York, Ontario Power Generation Inc., New York Power Authority, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and The Niagara Parks Commission.

The falls will be illuminated in green to observe St. Patrick's Day

With St. Patrick's Day happening on Tuesday, both the Canadian Horseshoe and American Falls will be perfect for pictures as they get washed in green color. But it's only for a limited time. They will change to green for the first 15 minutes of every hour on Tuesday, starting at 8 pm.

The illumination is actually a part of a bigger "Global Greening" initiative from Tourism Ireland, where multiple landmarks will be lit up in green. Other landmarks will include the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Empire State Building in New York, the CN Tower in Canada, and more.
