Negotiations have stalled between the United State and Iran. As we wait to see what will happen next, some are wondering what it will mean for those on the front lines in The Middle East? This is all taking place as the United States has announced new strategy for the Military Draft.

One major change seems to be coming later this year.

Starting this December, young men between the ages of 18 and 25 may be automatically registered for the Selective Service. In the past, individuals in this age group were required to register on their own. According to recent reports, that process could soon become automatic.

For many families, this brings back powerful memories.

I’ll never forget the day my brother left for the Marine Corps. I was just six years old when my 18-year-old brother left as a boy—and came home a United States Marine. That day still stands out vividly in my mind, especially the moment we saw him in his dress blues.

He served this country with pride, and to this day, I still see him as one of my greatest heroes—not just as a Marine, but as my big brother.

Every day across the United States, young men and women make the courageous decision to join the military. They are willing to put their lives on the line in service to this country, and for that, we are forever grateful.

The Selective Service system has been used in the past during times of war. Currently, there is no active military draft, but policy changes could soon update how registration works.

For families in Western New York and across the country, this serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the military and their loved ones.

There are many ways to show appreciation. For those who have not served, even a simple “thank you” can mean a lot. The next time you see a veteran—whether at a grocery store or out in your community—consider expressing your gratitude or offering a kind smile.

Now more than ever, it’s important to support both our veterans and active-duty military. As tensions continue to unfold around the world, America’s service members remain ready to answer the call at a moment’s notice.
