What’s Really Beneath Those Manhole Covers?

That’s one reason why this latest video trend is raising concerns.

After all, who knows exactly what lies beneath a manhole cover? Sewer systems and drainage tunnels can contain hazardous conditions, dangerous gases, standing water, sharp objects, and other hidden risks.

Entering these underground systems simply to create a video or satisfy curiosity could put someone in serious danger.

Why Are People Going Into Sewers?

One theory circulating online is that some of the people removing manhole covers and entering sewer systems are searching for money and valuables that may have been dropped into storm drains or lost underground.

If that’s true, there has to be an easier way to make money.

Most people would agree that searching through sewage and drainage systems in hopes of finding treasure doesn’t sound like a great plan.

A New Fear For Summer Walks?

Now that summer has arrived and more people are spending time outdoors, you may find yourself looking at manhole covers a little differently.

Every time you walk down a city street, you might wonder: Is someone about to open that thing and climb out?

Remember the viral trend of people hiding underneath parked vehicles? For some people, that memory still lingers. Even today, it’s not uncommon to approach a vehicle and briefly wonder if someone is hiding underneath, ready to jump out and harm you.

Entering Sewer Systems Is Illegal And Dangerous

It’s important to point out that removing manhole covers and entering sewer or drainage systems is generally illegal without proper authorization.

More importantly, it can be extremely dangerous.

Sewer systems are not designed for public access and can present serious safety hazards, including falls, toxic gases, flooding, and confined-space dangers. No viral video is worth risking your health or safety.
