There is some great news for those filing for a pistol permit in New York State in Erie County. It was announced this week that a satellite office in Elma will be opening again soon.

In a news release from the Erie County Clerk, it was announced that:

Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns announced the re-opening of the Erie County Pistol Department inside Elma Town Hall located at 1600 Bowen Road beginning March 16th. The satellite office will be open Wednesdays from 9:00AM- 1:00PM and 2:00PM- 5:00PM.

The pistol permit office in Elma has been closed for the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the office opens officially, it will be much easier to get certain services done in person and not have to drive to downtown Buffalo.

At this time, only pistol permit holders that have plastic permit cards will be able to take advantage of the following services: add/remove firearms, update personal information, pick up new or upgrade applications, and assistance with general pistol permit questions. No cash, checks or money orders will be accepted. Fees will be payable by credit card only.

There has been a rise in the amount of people applying for pistol permits in Erie County and across New York. If you have a permit already, keep in mind that you will need to update or renew your license with New York State.

There is a deadline that you need to know about that may affect you. Every five years, those who have a permit to own a handgun in New York will need to re-register or renew their permits with New York State and the New York State Police.

According to the New York State Police:

If your permit was issued before January 15, 2013, the deadline to submit your recertification is January 31, 2018. If your permit was issued on or after January 15, 2013, the deadline to recertify is five years after the date the permit was issued. As a permit holder, it is your responsibility to recertify your permit whether you receive a notification letter or not.
