WATCH: Puppy's Adorable Standoff With a Deer

There was a bit of a standoff at our home in Western New York this past week as our three-month-old puppy squared off with a deer just outside our dining room door.

Our puppy, Ruby, is a three-month-old Golden Retriever, and this may have been the very first time she had ever seen a deer.

A Small Taste of Spring in Western New York

The weather has started to change just a little bit. There are some early hints of spring as sunshine has peeked through the clouds, temperatures have climbed into the 30s, and reports say we could see 40s this weekend.

Spring is not that far away. However, those of us who grew up in Western New York know we still have to get through a few more weeks—maybe even a month or two—of on-again, off-again winter weather before we can truly say it’s here.

Training a Puppy During a Western New York Winter Isn’t Easy

We got our puppy right around Christmas, and she is a great dog. However, we are slowly acclimating her to new experiences, and introducing her to new things has been a challenge.

Getting outside for long walks hasn’t been easy when temperatures dip below zero. Most days, we just circle the backyard and head back inside to warm up. But the longer walks are coming… and so are the muddy paws.

The Moment Ruby Met a Deer

We were sitting in the living room when Ruby suddenly started barking at the back door.

I looked outside and saw a deer standing just a few feet from the glass. It seemed as though the deer was just as confused about the noise coming from inside the house as Ruby was about the unexpected visitor outside.

For a few moments, they simply stared at each other through the glass—each trying to figure out what the other was.

Raising a Puppy Comes With Surprises

If you have a puppy at home, you probably understand exactly what we’re going through. Making sure your dog learns new things, is well trained, and still protects the house is all part of raising a puppy.

And sometimes, that includes their very first standoff with wildlife right in your own backyard.
