The 5 Stages of Winter Weather in New York State
There are five stages we all go through when it comes to winter weather here in New York State. And believe it or not, residents across the state are preparing to enter the fifth and final stage very soon.
When summer ends and fall arrives, we start looking ahead to what comes next. In New York State, by late October or early November, the snow begins to fly—and it sticks around for months. But how do you know when winter is really over? Sure, the calendar says winter and spring, but experience tells us something very different.

Based on years of living through New York winters, here are the five stages of winter weather that we all go through every year.
Stage 1: Excited for the First Snowflake
Right around Halloween, when the first dusting of snow arrives, social media lights up. People are thrilled to announce the first snowfall of the year. Backyards, patio furniture, and grills get their annual snowy photo op. There’s a little extra pep in everyone’s step when those first flakes fall.
At this point, winter still feels magical.
Stage 2: Dreaming of a White Christmas
Once the snow is here and temperatures are cold enough for it to stick, excitement builds for a white Christmas. Who doesn’t love snow on Christmas Eve?
Thinking about the holidays without snow just feels wrong in New York State. The snow adds to the charm, the atmosphere, and the memories. During this stage, we fully embrace winter.
Stage 3: Thankful for Snow (As Long as You Don’t Have to Drive in It)
As winter settles in and the days get shorter, many New Yorkers turn to winter activities. Ski hills, sledding hills, and snowmobile trails become busy.
When the forecast calls for feet of snow or a lake-effect storm, you’re happy for the skiers and snowmobilers—but also quietly hoping it doesn’t make your commute a nightmare.
This is when snow is still appreciated… with limits.
Stage 4: Completely Over It
By late January, the mood shifts. This is when we all start saying, “I can’t wait for spring.”
Salt has eaten away at your car. It’s tracked through the house and all over the floors. Every trip outside requires layers of clothing, brushing off the car, and navigating roads filled with drivers who seem to forget how to handle snow.
This is when the real frustration of winter in Western New York and across the state sets in.
Stage 5: Fake Spring and False Hope
By mid-to-late February, snowfall starts to taper off, but the temperatures remain brutally cold. This is the final stage.
You’re mentally done with winter, but Mother Nature isn’t.
Then it happens: the temperature climbs into the 30s. Snow starts melting. The sun comes out. You feel hope. This is what New Yorkers call “Fake Spring.” And just when you start believing winter is over… another late-season snowstorm hits.
The Home Stretch to Spring in New York
Stage five is both frustrating and exciting because real signs of spring are finally showing. Once we reach St. Patrick’s Day, Dyngus Day, and Easter, we know we’re in the home stretch. With a little luck, by Mother’s Day, New York State will be sunny, warm, and officially done with winter.
At least… until next year.
