This Might Be New York State’s Most Unique Deer
It is that time of year in New York State when drivers need to stay alert for deer. If you are behind the wheel, pay extra attention during the early morning and evening hours when deer are often on the move. However, some deer are catching more attention than others, as was the case in Western New York this past weekend.
It is also hunting season. Deer hunters have been in the woods since October 1 and will continue pursuing whitetails through the end of 2026 and into the beginning of 2027. There have also been some changes to deer hunting opportunities this year, as the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has made additional deer management permits available in certain areas.
In fact, another round of leftover deer management permits is scheduled to become available November 1 for hunters looking for additional opportunities this season.

But even if you don’t hunt, it is important to stay alert and watch for deer on the move. A collision with a deer can ruin your day and, in some cases, lead to serious injuries.

Piebald Deer Spotted on Western New York Golf Course
One deer, in particular, is catching plenty of attention after being spotted recently on a golf course in Eden, New York.
My friend Rob sent me these photos of a piebald deer wandering around the area. These deer are special to see, and this one has a particularly striking pattern of white and brown across its body.
Piebald deer have unusual coloring caused by a genetic condition that results in patches of white fur mixed with their normal coloration. Their appearance can vary considerably, making sightings like this one especially interesting for wildlife enthusiasts.
Why Do Some Hunters Avoid Piebald Deer?
Piebald deer have long fascinated hunters and wildlife watchers alike. Some hunters even choose to pass up an opportunity to harvest one because of the superstitions and traditions surrounding these uniquely colored animals.
While beliefs about piebald deer vary, their unusual appearance certainly makes them stand out in the woods.

Watch for Deer on New York Roads This Fall
If you are heading out hunting, good luck this season, and remember to stay safe!
If you are driving, keep an eye out for deer that may suddenly run across the road. Deer activity can increase the risk of collisions, particularly during the early morning and evening hours.
And don’t forget to appreciate the incredible wildlife opportunities around us. The piebald deer photographed by my friend Rob is a beautiful example of the wildlife we are fortunate to see here in Western New York.
I always welcome photos like these, so feel free to share your wildlife sightings. We are blessed with some beautiful animals and natural scenery throughout Western New York State, and it is always exciting to see something a little out of the ordinary.
