The concept of self-driving vehicles has always made me a bit uneasy, even though the technology today is advancing far enough to pull it off.

According to WIVB, Daimler Trucks is teaming up with Torc Robotics for this new self-driving program. They will begin test drives for self-driving tractor-trailers in Virginia.

But this doesn't mean that the trucks will be fully automated during testing -- an engineer will be overseeing it and a fully-trained safety driver will be in the big rig, while the test runs are taking place.

They've been testing on a closed-loop course before taking these out on the streets and thruways.

“Bringing Level 4 trucks to the public roads is a major step toward our goal to deliver reliable and safe trucks for the benefits of our customers, our economies and society,” Daimler Board Member Martin Daum says.
