Will It Snow In Buffalo, New York On Halloween?

Since trick or treating began in the 16th century, it feels like parents have been making us bundle up and wear a coat over your costume, which always feels like it’s putting a damper on the costume. But how likely is it that it will snow on Halloween? 

The history of trick-or-treating goes back to Scotland and Ireland, where the tradition of going to homes in the neighborhood on Halloween and putting on a “small performance” to be rewarded with food or treats. Eventually people also connected that to wearing costumes, since some would wear it to go with their schtick. 

If the weather stays the way it’s been for most of the month, you may be able to get away with not wearing a coat on Halloween. However in Buffalo, we know there’s always a chance of snow…but how likely is it on Halloween night? 

I mean, I have to say – I love my mom and dad, but in your kid brain, it just always felt so lame to wear a coat over your Halloween costume. Like I understand that our parents care, and that’s really nice…but I felt like every year I had a coat over my costume, it was hiding the awesomeness of it.

If you feel the same way, you may be in luck! 

This year, you may not have to , because looking at Buffalo’s history, the average lowest temperature is 39 degrees, and it rarely snows on Halloween.

According to the National Weather Service, the greatest Halloween snow we ever had was 4 inches back in 1917…so things are looking promising this year. However, the highest storm total for Halloween in Buffalo history was 7.8 inches. 

It’s also worth notice that we just passed the anniversary of the October Surprise Storm back in 2006 when we unexpectedly got almost 2 ft of snow. So you never really know when it comes to weather in Buffalo, but things are looking promising as of now! 

Weather Forecast For Buffalo’s Halloween 2023

The National Weather Service released the forecast for Tuesday, October 31st and in Western New York, it looks like it will be cloudy with a high of 47 and a low of 39. 

No signs of precipitation in the forecast as of now, but hopefully it stays clear for Halloween night!
