Over  2,300 people a few years ago caught a germ that got a lot of people sick and New York State reacted by making more mandates and laws when it comes to splash pads, especially because so many towns and villages are installing them.

It is pretty gross.

It happens because the kids are going to the bathroom on the splash pad and you may not be seeing it. Then, when the water gets contaminated and then splash pads just reuse the water and recirculate it over and over again. It is important to note: Swim diapers do not stop germs, poop, or pee from getting in the water.

Here are the new 'recommendations' from the CDC:

  • Don't swallow the water.
  • Don't let water go up your nose.
  • Don't poop or pee in the water.
  • Don't sit or stand on the jets. Sitting or standing on jets can rinse poop off your butt.

Cryptosporidium because of splash pads in New York State. According to the CDC:

New York public health officials found that splash pads were not regulated in the state. In response, New York passed emergency public health laws to regulate splash pads. This included requiring ultraviolet light systems to kill Cryptosporidium, which can survive more than 7 days in water that has been adequately disinfected with chlorine or bromine.

New York State wants splash pad operators to use ultraviolet light systems in order to kill off bad germs. The State mandates that all splash pad operators fill out this safety plan.
