This Holiday Song is Being Banned?
I had to do a double take when I heard that a Cleveland radio station is banning a classic holiday song because of its suggestive lyrics. The song debuted in 1944 and has been redone by multiple artists over the years, but now after more than 75 years some people are offended by it. So to avoid any controversy the management of WOIO Radio is removing it from its play list.
Listeners complained that the lyrics to "Baby It's Cold Outside" sent the wrong message. The station manager said he didn't understand what the problem was until he read the lyrics.
The song is a duet between a man and woman on a cold night. The woman is reluctant to stay with the man and tells him no, but he's insistent because it's cold outside. Among the lyrics:
Woman: I ought to say no, no, no sirMan: Mind if move in closer?
Woman: At least I'm gonna say that I triedMan: What's the sense of hurtin' my pride?
Woman: I really can't stayMan: Baby don't hold out, Baby it's cold outsideWoman: Ah, you're very pushy you know?
Man: I like to think of it as opportunisticWoman: I simply must goMan: Baby it's cold outside
Woman: The answer is noMan: But baby it's cold outside
Suggestive? Perhaps. But in this day and age of filthy, vulgar and disgusting songs (can you really call them songs?) that are being played on some radio stations these days, you're going to question the lyrics of a long-time holiday classic? Many of these outrageous songs aren't even close to suggestive, they're outright blatant in their sexual content. And kids love 'em.
I'm sure you've heard the song over the years. Take a listen and see if you're offended by what's intended to be a light-hearted courtship.
