Here Are The Top 5 Crimes Committed in Buffalo This Year, So Far
With all the headlines about murders lately, you might think that homicide is the biggest crime in Buffalo, but that's not actually the case. Murder did not make the top 5 crimes list (but Buffalo does have a high murder rate, see below). Larceny is the crime committed the most in the 716. Wikipedia describes larceny as,
a crime involving the unlawful taking or theft of the personal property of another person or business.
The data was pulled from the Buffalo Police Department's crime statistics, which I sorted and analyzed.
While murders didn't make the top 5, the statistics are still quite high. There have been 49 homicides in Buffalo from January to August of 2022 (which is the most recent data). In 2021 there were 67 murders, and in 2020 there were 65. With two more months left in the year and only 8 months of data reported, 2022 is on track to be on par with 2021 and 2020. There were 61 rapes in Buffalo from January to August, making it the lowest committed crime on the list, according to the stats provided by the police department. But the number of rapes actually increased significantly from 2021, when there were 13 reported during the same time period. The other crimes that made the top 5 are listed below with the stats for each month.

Buffalo Makes The List Of U.S. Cities With Highest Murder Rates
Buffalo made the list of cities in America with the most homicides this year. 24/7 Wall St. compiled the list. It used homicide data from this year along with population 2020 data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
We considered all U.S. cities with populations of at least 250,000 as well as cities with smaller populations and an average of at least 10 homicides a year between 2015 and 2019. Only cities with publicly available homicide data were considered.
