U.S. Reaches World Cup Final With 2-0 Win Over Germany
Carli Lloyd and Kelley O'Hara scored goals, and the United States beat top-ranked Germany, 2-0, in the semifinals of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Montreal on Tuesday night. With the victory, the Americans advanced to Sunday’s championship final in Vancouver, where they will face the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal match between Japan and England.
The U.S. was much more aggressive than Germany for the first half of the game, but Team USA didn’t score until Lloyd converted a penalty kick past German keeper Nadine Angerer in the 69th minute.
Lloyd later assisted on O'Hara’s goal in the 84th minute to all but clinch the win, avenging an 3-0 American loss to the Germans in the 2003 World Cup semifinals in Portland, Ore.
U.S. goalie Hope Solo continued her remarkable shutout streak. She has not allowed a goal in a span of five and a half matches.
The Germans will play in Saturday's third-place match against the loser of the Japan-England contest.
