As we start the last Saturday of February, there are definitely some noticeable changes waiting for you outside.

Across Western New York, the sun will be shining and temperatures are expected to climb back near the 50-degree mark once again. After the kind of winter we’ve had, that feels like a turning point.

Sunshine Returns to Western New York

As you head outside for work or to bring the kids to practice, you’ll probably notice something encouraging, grass is starting to reappear. The snowbanks are shrinking. Driveways are clearing. Yards are slowly coming back to life.

Pothole Season Is Back in New York State

Unfortunately, potholes are also making their annual comeback.

I recently drove through East Aurora and along Route 16 (Seneca Street), and it was a mess once again. It feels like ever since I was a kid there more than 40 years ago, it has been the same story every spring.

And this isn’t just an East Aurora issue.

After the deep freezes, heavy snow, and constant plowing this winter, roads across New York State are expected to experience a significant pothole season. The constant freezing and thawing weakens pavement, and when the snow melts, the damage becomes obvious fast. Drivers should stay alert, especially on secondary roads and neighborhood streets.

Wet Paw Season Has Officially Begun

If you have dogs and you’re ready to enjoy the sunshine, don’t forget the towel. Wet paw season is officially back.

Melting snow means muddy yards, soaked grass, and plenty of cleanup when your dog runs back inside. For those of us with long-haired dogs, like our golden retriever, Ruby, it’s even more of a challenge. Mud seems to find its way everywhere.

Spring in Western New York may look beautiful outside, but inside it can mean extra laundry.

Car Wash Lines Will Be Busy

If you’re thinking about getting a car wash this weekend, that’s a great idea.

Road salt used throughout winter in New York State can really eat away at vehicles. The undercarriage, especially, takes a beating from salt and brine treatments. With the extremely cold temperatures we experienced in February, a
significant amount of salt was used on roads this season.

Expect car wash locations to be crowded. Be patient, and maybe grab an extra coffee while you wait your turn in line.

Even Warmer Weather Is on the Way

If today feels good, next weekend could feel even better. Some forecasts are calling for temperatures to approach 70 degrees for the first time in 2026. That’s something many families across Western New York are ready for.

It might be time to:

  • Break out the grill
  • Start thinking about pulling the kids’ bikes out of the shed
  • Take a long family walk
  • Begin early spring yard cleanup

Spring in Western New York is getting closer, especially as we prepare to “spring forward” with Daylight Saving Time the weekend of March 8.

After a long winter, this weekend feels like the first real reminder that brighter days are ahead.
