But this weekend, history will be made as hunters ages 12 and 13 will be allowed to hunt during the firearm season for whitetail deer. Recent changes to the law allow youth hunters ages 12 and 13 to hunt with a firearm under proper supervision and with the appropriate license in Erie County.

Erie County Youth Deer Hunt Begins This Weekend

This was a controversial topic in the late spring and early summer, as the Erie County executive attempted to block the law from taking effect. However, the legislature had enough votes to override the veto, and kids will head to the woods this weekend.

There are a variety of rules and regulations that 12- and 13-year-old hunters must follow during the special Columbus Day weekend firearm hunt. Make sure you are familiar with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation regulations and that your youth hunter is properly equipped and in a safe position while hunting.

Youth Hunters Could Help Shape the Future

The future of hunting is in the youth of Erie County and throughout New York State.

Across the state, conservation efforts continue as wildlife populations grow and animals are increasingly affected by development and the expansion of neighborhoods. Hunting plays an important role in helping manage wildlife populations, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation does a great job of helping maintain healthy wildlife populations and habitats.

Getting Kids Involved in Hunting

If you plan to hunt with your kids, or if you have children who are interested in hunting, you will need to complete the proper courses and obtain the appropriate licenses.

Once you head into the woods, be safe and enjoy the incredible outdoor resources we have here in New York State. From Buffalo to Albany, there are plenty of opportunities for kids to learn about conservation, the outdoors, responsible hunting, and respect for wildlife.

This weekend will be an important moment for young hunters in Erie County, and it could be the beginning of a new generation of hunters who will help carry on New York’s hunting and conservation traditions.
