Thinking about checking out the snow that is STILL in Buffalo in July?! While we in no way are telling you to go check out the mountains of snow that are still in Buffalo following last year's November snowstorm, we do have some tips you might want to consider if you take the journey!

LIz Mantel and Rob Banks headed over to the Central Terminal to check out the snow piles there. They even had a little snowball fight that you can check out in this video. But while we were there we learned a few things we thought we would share about how to experience snow in July in Buffalo.

  1. Wear rain boots. Seriously, you have to wear rain boots if you are going to walk around there!
  2. Watch your step! The ground may look solid, but that won't stop you from sinking fast in certain spots. It took about four seconds for a member of our staff to realize they were submerged eight inches into a very COLD very gross mud-ice-water mixture. (You can see that here if you don't believe us.)
  3. Bring a towel. Bring hand sanitizer. Bring water to rinse the mud off yourself when you leave.
  4. Bring a shovel. If you want to really see the snow/glacier, you'll probably need to move some dirt, and maybe some grass, to find the snow...ice.
  5. Bring a camera. Come on, how often do you find snow in July?! You'll want to document it!
  6. Don't pick anything up (really don't touch anything if you can avoid it). This is basically a landfill. Think of all the garbage that was on the streets that was picked up with the snow and ended up here. You might just want to gaze at it from afar because it is pretty dirty (and smelly).

The reality of the snow mounds in Buffalo? They are HUGE piles of ice insulated by a blanket of dirt and grass growing on that dirt. And the ice IS melting, which means this is a mud mound with a pit of water and very soggy mud surrounding it. It's kind of gross.

Happy hottest week in Buffalo, Buffalonians! This is a joke that will live on for years to come. Snow in July!
