When I look back on my childhood memories, one of the things that sticks out are the Sunday drives that my father took us on. One of our favorite destinations was the Welland Canal in Ontario. The Welland Canal connects Lake Erie with Lake Ontario. Because of the difference in elevation between the two waterways, a system of locks allows the ships to make their way from one lake to the other. Many of the locks along the Welland Canal have visitor areas where you can park your vehicle and watch the ships pass through. As kids, my family and I spent quite a few Sunday afternoons watching the ships pass through the Welland Canal. My late grandfather was an engineer on the Panama Canal for over 25 years so I guess these things are part of my DNA.
