This Enormous Bear Was Spotted in a New York Backyard
There are dozens of black bear sightings being reported across New York State this spring!
Spring has officially arrived across New York State. Warmer weather is finally here, and that means black bears are waking up from hibernation. Along with that comes an important question many homeowners are asking: What should you do if you see a black bear on your property?
What To Do If You See A Black Bear In New York
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) works year-round to protect wildlife and keep both animals and residents safe. The goal in any wildlife encounter is conservation first, ensuring animals remain wild while minimizing human risk.
The first bear report of the season on a Western New York area Facebook page stated that: "Just want to let my neighbors on Pratham Rd know that there is a huge black bear in the area. He knocked all my bird feeders down this morning, and just now came back for the others ( which I just removed) I'm sure he's just passing through".
New York has strict laws and guidelines when it comes to interacting with wildlife, especially black bears. Understanding these rules can help prevent dangerous situations.
No Spring Bear Hunting In New York State
Unlike some other states and parts of Canada, New York does not allow spring bear hunting. Bear hunting seasons are limited and typically align with deer hunting seasons later in the year.

Hunters should review all current DEC regulations, as several big game laws specifically address black bear hunting.
Feeding Bears In New York Is Strongly Discouraged
New York State is very clear: do not feed bears.
"Bears will readily utilize human-created food sources and repeat access can make bears bolder. This can lead to an increase in human-bear conflicts around homes and residential areas, especially when natural food sources are scarce. Feeding bears intentionally is illegal".
For campers, this is especially important. If you spend time outdoors, there’s a good chance you could encounter a bear at some point. The key is to make your campsite as unattractive as possible:
- Store food in secure containers
- Never leave garbage out
- Clean up immediately after meals
Feeding bears or leaving food accessible can make them lose their natural fear of humans, creating dangerous situations for everyone involved.
How To Keep Bears Out Of Your Backyard
Black bears are always looking for an easy meal, especially in the spring when they are extremely hungry after months of hibernation.
If your property offers food, they may stick around.
To reduce the chances of attracting a bear:
- Secure all trash in tightly sealed containers
- Remove or store bird feeders and birdseed
- Keep outdoor cooking areas clean
A bear that finds food in your yard once is very likely to return.
When To Call Authorities About A Bear
Always keep a safe distance from any wildlife you encounter.
If you’re concerned about a bear on your property, contact your local authorities or the New York State DEC. Do not attempt to approach, feed, or scare the animal yourself.
If a bear appears sick, aggressive, or poses a threat, trained professionals will handle the situation safely.
Leave Baby Wildlife Alone
This time of year is also when many animals are giving birth.
If you come across what appears to be a baby deer, bear cub, or other young wildlife, do not touch it or move it. In most cases, the mother is nearby and will return. Interfering can do more harm than good.
