In terms of the economy and the job market I've seen Buffalo go from boom to bust over a period of decades.  During the 1950's and 60's, Buffalo was booming with heavy industry providing plenty of high paying jobs.  It was hard work, but they provided families with a good income.

As foreign competition began to take its toll on industrial cities like Buffalo, companies began to move or outright close and the jobs evaporated.  But over the past 10 years or so Western New York has been on the rebound.

Healthcare, education, financing and software development are among the growing job categories in Buffalo.  You can even find some good summer jobs.

The personal finance website WalletHub has ranked 150 cities nationwide in such categories as "Youth Job Market" and "Social Environment and Affordability". Buffalo's "Youth Job Market" ranking was right in the middle of the pack, but its "Social Environment and Affordability" ranking was very high to raise the city's overall ranking.

Here's the complete report.
