American swimmer Ryan Lochte took the first gold medal for the American team at the London Olympics on Saturday by winning the 400-meter individual medley.  Michael Phelps came in fourth in the event and failed to win a medal.  Phelps has already won 14 gold medals in his Olympic career and will get several more opportunities to add to that total during the London Games.  He'll have to defeat Lochte to do it though.

Lochte was born in Canandaigua, NY and spent his early childhood there until his family moved to Florida so his father could coach swimming.  Lochte learned to swim by the age of five, but didn't get seriously involved in competitive swimming until his junior year in high school.  Then he blossomed in college twice winning the title of NCAA Swimmer of the Year while winning NCAA and SEC championships.

Although his website calls Gainesville, Florida his hometown, he was born here in New York State just down the Thruway from Buffalo.
