Last week Western New Yorkers got some really amazing news, A Costco was coming to the 716.

Unfortunately, the location of the new proposed Costco didn't sit well with many Western New Yorkers. The new location for Costco is right in the heart of already busy traffic are near the Boulevard Commons in Amherst, right off Niagara Fall Boulevard.

If you have driven by this area on a weekday near 5 pm or on the weekend, you know that traffic is crazy. You have people coming off the 290 headed to the Boulevard Commons to shop at places like Target, Barnes and Nobel, Lowes, and Best Buy.

Now you will see an increase in traffic as people head to Costco. I used to live in the area, right across Maple road, and trying to drive down Ridge Lea Road on a Saturday afternoon was mind-numbing.

Unless Amherst plans to extend the road from two lanes to four lanes, you will see major traffic backups in that area.

Of course, the amount of traffic could have been eased if Costco had decided to build its new store in a different location.

Here are 5 alternative locations that make more sense for a new Costco location in Western New York.

1. Amherst - If you wanted to keep the new Costco in Amherst, you could have built it right off Sheridan Drive near Whole Foods and across the street from BJ's. The open plaza area is begging for tenants, and with four lanes of traffic available on Sheridan Drive, traffic wouldn't be as bad as the Ridge Lea location.

2. Hamburg - The Northtowns already has two BJ's and a Sam's Club. Why not put the new Costco in the Southtowns? You have space available by the McKinley Mall. Not much is in the mall now and if you put Costco there, you have built-in parking lots and enough traffic lights to keep traffic flowing.

3. West Seneca - Looking for a place that already has built-in parking and plenty of ways to get traffic in and out? What about the location of the old Seneca Mall. There is plenty of space and plenty of ways to get in and out of the plaza.

4. Lockport - There is plenty of space as you head into Lockport right off Millersport Highway. Or simply put the new Costco on Transit Road, maybe across the Drive-In, and you have plenty of ways to get in and out of the plaza and you already have 4 lanes of traffic so delays shouldn't be an issue.

5. Cheektowaga - Looking to get lots of people to Costco and want to already have the built-in roadways? Look at the old Thruway Mall location. Plenty of ways to get in and out of the plaza. It is close to the Thruway and there is plenty of space and built-in parking.

So while we celebrate the arrival of a Costco, a lot of us could have been happier with a different location of the newest big bargain outlet store.
