Gilmore has been on the IR since the start of the season and is expected to be able to return to the fields as soon as week 6.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that New England released Gilmore this morning.

After playing five seasons for the Bills, Gilmore coming off a Pro-Bowl season signed a 5-year, $65 million contract with New England in 2017. He would go on to be named an All-Pro in 2018 and 2019 and was named the NFL's defensive player of the year in 2018.

During his stint in Buffalo, Gilmore recorded 226 total tackles and had 14 interceptions.

Could he make a comeback to Buffalo this season? It would depend on what his salary cap number would be. According to overthecap.com, the Buffalo Bills have just over 4 million dollars available in cap space. Would that be enough to sign Gilmore to a one-year deal or help sign a multi-year deal?

Currently the Bills' top corner Tre White has a cap hit of over 6.7 million dollars. With Gilmore being considered a top corner in the league, chances are he would want around the same amount of money.

Of course, he is coming off an injury, the Bills are Superbowl contenders, and he does know Western New York, Gilmore might be willing to make a deal this season for a shot at winning a Super Bowl ring.

The Bills already have a top-ranked defense so far this season, and Gilmore could help lock it down even more.
