The archery season is coming, and the 2025 New York State deer season may be one of the most talked-about or written-about yet. This season, archery hunters have the option of using a crossbow right from the start. It is a big move for New York State, and it does come with some regulations that hunters should be aware of.

The leaves are changing, but it still feels like summer. When the season opens, the high temperatures will be in the 70s for most of New York State. Not exactly the best weather for those who love being in a tree stand on a crisp morning. The archery season starts on October 1st for most of New York State, and if you plan on taking that crossbow out with you, here are some things to keep in mind as you are driving to camp.

"A person may not transport or possess a shotgun, rifle or crossbow in or on a motor vehicle unless the firearm is unloaded in both chamber and magazine or the crossbow is unloaded or taken down".

When is your crossbow considered unloaded? New York State says, "A crossbow is considered unloaded when it is uncocked. A crossbow is considered taken down when the limbs have been removed from the stock, securely fastened in a case, or locked in a trunk".

I can't wait to get in the woods this fall! I am torn on which to use. I love my bow! However, I have had great success with my crossbow and love how easy it is to shoot from a tree stand. Either way, it sure is exciting to be heading back to the woods!
