Most people are aware that there are food pantries out there for people who are in need.  But did you know that there are also pet food pantries available?

Hard times can strike when you least expect it.  An illness that puts you out of work, or creates a crazy amount of hospital bills can put someone in a terrible position to put food on their table.  Heck, look what has happened over the last year.  So many people lost their jobs through no fault of their own and have had to rely on other ways to get their food.

So what happens when you find yourself in a dire situation and not only do you have to feed yourself, but your kids, and even your pets.

I've always said that pets are like other members of the family.  You don't let them suffer and go without.  But unfortunately, some people will resort to giving them "people food" when times get tough.  Not only is that bad for your pets, but it's also taking food out of your mouth too.

The good news is that there is help out there for pet owners who have fallen on hard times.  I had no idea these things exist.  They're pet food pantries, and they're here in Western New York.  Buffalo Rising is going to be highlighting some of the pantries in Western New York that are available for people who need them.

This week, they're highlighting Pete's Pet Food Pantry.  They work out of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 96 Jewett Parkway in Buffalo.  They distribute food on the first Sunday of each month from 3-4 pm.

Of course, they are a "not-for-profit organization" so they depend on people for their donations.  If you'd like to contribute, they ask that you contact their donations coordinator (Mark) at 887-3891.  Click here for more options to donate.

And remember to check back with Buffalo Rising to find out where there will be more pet pantries across Western New York.

Some of the others that I've found include:

Animal Food Bank of Western New York (Orchard Park)

Find other options here (please call ahead to make sure they are still distributing)
