You sometimes wonder who dreams up this stuff. There seems to be a designated day to celebrate or recognize just about everything under the sun. Basically it’s an almanac that we use each day that tells us today, July 12, is Different Color Eyes Day. I guess it recognizes diversity in people, even in the color of their eyes.

It’s not dangerous, it doesn’t affect your vision. These are people with two different colored eyes. In some it may be subtle. In others it could be dramatic; one eye could be brown and the other blue. It’s a trait called Heterochromia – it’s a combination of the Greek words Hetero – “different and Chromia – “color”.

Some people are born with Heterochromia. For some it’s caused by injury. For others it’s caused by disease.

Among the people who have it are:

  • David Bowie

Bowie’s left eye was injured in a fight with a buddy from school over a girl. Depending on the light, his left eye appears to be brown or green, either way a different color from his blue right eye.
